Mary Travers has been one of my inspirations for at least 50 years. I was a little worried about reading this book, in case she showed herself to be less genuine, heroic, loving, talented, and witty than the person I observed. Not to worry! This book reveals her to be just the person I thought she was, and I couldn't be more satisfied or humbled. It's not particularly polished writing, but it sinks right into the heart of things with a rare intimacy.

Mary Travers A Woman Words eBook Mary Travers Mike Renshaw Reviews

I wanted more from this book but understand she was sick and was unable to finish it. I would love to see a book about the trio written by Peter and Noel Paul. They have such a long history together and have taken part in so many social issues it would be a fascinating read.
I love Peter, Paul and Mary still. This is not the typical biography, but the writings of a very literate and thoughtful woman who overcame an abusive marriage and turbulent times to come out whole and rear two strong women like herself. Mary Travers will be missed, but we have her words and music to enrich our world.
This is a must for anyone who loves Mary Travers' voice, musical, political or otherwise. Beautifully organized, with an overview of all facets that one could hope for.
Here in this volume, one has insights into Travers the musician, the mother, the friend, the wife, the American patriot who demanded better of all of us, starting with her own person. Highly recommended.
For anybody who is a fan of PP&M you will certainly remember her has being the one who never spoke (in the early days) and just looked mysterious & sexy on stage. She is amazingly well read & articulate & this no holds barred account of her life is well worth the wait . Rest in Peace dear one. The seller provided in record time & excellent condition.
She was a person of many facets and very talented, admired by absolute millions. Disappointed the book did not give a lot of information about her private life. Was left with a lot of questions and wondering. It was not chronological. It was largely 'her own writings' about many different subjects, but they did not flow. Gained the impression parts of it were there to fill it up, for example the interview with Bob Dylan. However it was an interesting read for a devoted fan or admirer.
A great lady. This book is a bit lame. There is a good chapter on singing. It was not really written by Mary T. It was put together after her death but she gave it here blessing in her last days.
I could never review a book about Mary Travers without first thinking about how much she meant to me. First hearing her voice at age 15, and listening to the words, my life's path diverged from the direction it was heading. I wanted to be Mary so badly that although I had curly hair (and it would be a few years before Radical Chic appeared) I begged my mother and friends to iron my hair every day. I learned guitar and my first songbook was a PP&M one. All of their songs followed me through my life when pregnant I sang Hush A Bye to the fetus and later to the baby (and still later, to any puppies adopted through the years). Puff the Magic Dragon still makes me teary. And If I Had A Hammer, with all its nuances, is still in my mind, especially Mary's unique and strong voice. So this book is just an affirmation of the beautiful (inside and out) woman who graced many of our lives and served as a much-needed role model. I did not realize that she wrote for a newspaper very close to where I lived in Philadelphia. I did not know she was a working human rights activist, visiting countries like Nicaragua. I did not realize that her early married life fueled her activism for heartbreaking feminist issues such as domestic abuse and abortion. Most of all, I did not know that she had a radio show. Her interviews with Bob Dylan, Richie Havens and Jerry Garcia are insightful, as only a fellow folk singer/musician's questions can be. I especially loved the interplay between Mary and Dylan. She mentions that she is usually the one interviewed, not the one interviewing, so Dylan says he will interview her. The result is an exceptional, fly-on-the-wall, intimate conversation between friends as they swap fascinating information for the listener. If you are a fan and would like to see another facet of Mary Travers, please read the book.
